KEVIN Rudd is considering changes to allow authorities to take action against new Australian citizens who act in defiance of values underpinning their citizenship.
The Prime Minister said yesterday he was reflecting on the adequacy of citizenship laws after news that a Sydney man had been arrested for allegedly harassing the families of Australian soldiers killed in Afghanistan.
On Wednesday, the Australian Federal Police charged self-styled Muslim cleric Sheik Haron for allegedly writing letters to widows calling the dead Diggers pigs and murderers.
The sheik, understood to go by a variety of names, has been charged with using a postal service to "menace, harass or cause offence". He was granted conditional bail, to reappear on November 10.
Mr Rudd yesterday described the case as stomach-churning, but said he would not comment in detail because it was under investigation.

NSW RSL president Don Rowe said if Sheik Haron were found guilty he should "not be allowed to live in Australia and enjoy the freedom which has been so valiantly fought (for) and sacrificed by our young men".
Sheik Haron allegedly wrote to Mr Rudd in February claiming that the Black Saturday bushfires that killed 173 people were retribution for Australian support of the execution in Indonesia of militants convicted of the deadly 2002 Bali nightclub bombings.
Immigration barrister John Gibson said there were grounds for the government to take action against a person if the applicant had lied in their application for permanent residence.
But he said it was "far more complex" where a person had obtained citizenship by conferral. "Once you become a citizen, for better or for worse you're a part of the country," he told The Australian.
"Once you become a citizen, for better or for worse you're a part of the country."
Australia has been throwing around citizenship like confetti for decades. Given our ridiculously lax citizenship laws, it is hardly surprising that we have miscreants like Sheik Haron now residing in our country.
Personally, I think Australia should emulate Switzerland's citizenship laws, the toughest in the Western world.

If you want to become Swiss you must live in the country legally for at least 12 years—and pay taxes, and have no criminal record—before you can apply for citizenship. It still does not mean that your wish will be granted, however, and the fact that you were born in Lausanne or Lugano does not make any difference. There are no “amnesties” and illegals are deported. Even if an applicant satisfies all other conditions, the local community in which he resides has the final say: it can interview the applicant and hold a public vote before naturalization is approved. If rejected he can apply again, but only after ten years.

As a seventh generation Australian with British ancestry I have to say this is where British or British colonized countries are just plain stupid to themselves in our modern day. Not the people but the governments and those that hold the power.
The very nature of what made Australia the lucky country is very much under threat by the ease at which these types of people can walk into our country, AND somehow be protected, and this is an issue that HAS to be taken in hand before (if not already) it is too late. I fear very much for my children and future decendants based upon the careless stupidity within decisions being made today that effect every facet of our lives. The people they are giving citizenship to today are people seeking to create a new Australia based on their lifestyle and values not the lifestyle and values that are currently in place and that many of us have enjoyed growing up in.
I don't have a problem with people of any nationality, skin colour or background being given citizenship, BUT I do have a problem with those who do not assimilate but in turn expect us to change our way of life and thinking to their ways and bring the trouble of their countries to our country.... Of which our government is playing patsy to in an attempt to win the popularity contest of world governments and leaders.

The problem with a lot of this is the "protection" visa scam. Previously it was a temporary visa so holders could be removed if they broke the rules, protection visas are now permanent residence visas. Unlike other PR visas, applicants have instant access to Medicare and Centrelink. The other thing is that they are allowed an Australian travel document to then return to the country or regime they sought "protection" from. Kind of ironic, isn't it? This is of course so they can bring the rest of their family to Australia to be "protected" i.e. supported by Australian taxpayers. The refugee advocates clue these people up in all their "privileges" so they know exactly what buttons to press "trauma", "persecution" etc often with scant evidence of their situation. Many turn out to not have any need for protection but once granted, it cannot be revoked except under extreme circumstances. Then, most of these people who arrived before 2007, only needed two years before they "qualified" as citizens. It's a ridiculous system prone to abuse.

This is just a set of priorities I cannot see anywhere in Aussie politics today. We need 500 authentically passionate and forward-looking Aussies to get the party off the ground and to help formulate a set of policies that can the Australian political landscape. Immigration on a whole is very beneficial to Canada and its residents. History tells repeatedly that it is human kind that loses its previleges. Immigration is good for Canada and its people in any way you consider but the undeue advantage taken by a few people in the name of refugee act bestowed by Canadian government is being highly misused. We have to wait and see how far Canada can allow people in the name of refugees. Of course, humanitarian concerns are to be given the highest priority for human kind’s development and survival but misuse of a syustm is highly deplorable. Let us all pray that the gates of immigration be not closed for all those good people and eligible aspirants just because of the refugees who infiltrate this country and can be a bigger and unsolvable problem. As of now Canada is large in heart and resources.

Speaking from another perspective, I think Australian laws on Immigration has become tougher than ever. Having said that, I don't mean it's not appropriate. Rather, we should realise that we need a better system which can identify legal and trustful immigrants who have studied and worked ethically in Australia. And at the same time, we should be able to identify who has come illegally.
The reason I said that is I know some people who have come legally are actually illegal immigrants. They have taken advantage of some certain weak points in the laws to make them become legal.
Therefore, making the system harder does not necessarily mean the quality of immigrants who have come here will be increased.
